Lasik Aberrations worse with Large Pupils

This LASIK complication is much more pronounced in patients with large pupils. This is a photo of an opaque (black) soft lens with a clear 8 mm pupil under a gas permeable scleral lens. This eye underwent LASIK surgery several years prior to the time this photo was taken. Because of the light used to take this photo, this pupil has a relatively small diameter. The purpose of the scleral lens is to neutralize the vision distortions created by the LASIK created irregular cornea. The opaque soft lens with the clear pupil minimizes the effects of the low light induced large pupil. While not a perfect solution, many patients wear this scleral lens-soft lens combination to function better while driving at night.
